The LA Galaxy hired Gustavo Barros Schelotto, Ariel Pereyra and Dominic Kinnear as assistant coaches to head coach Guillermo Barros Schelotto, the club announced Wednesday. In addition, Javier Valdecantos will serve as fitness coach. Former director of sports performance Pierre Barrieu, director of player personnel and scouting Kurt Schmid and assistant coach Ezra Hendrickson will no longer be a part of the organization.
Guillermo Barros Schelotto’s twin brother, Gustavo, was also an assistant coach when Guillermo coached at Lanús and Boca Juniors. Gustavo also had a 16-year playing career, during which he played alongside Guillermo at Club de Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata and Boca Juniors. He also had stints playing in Spain, Peru and Puerto Rico.
Pereyra also spent time playing alongside and coaching with head coach Schelotto in Argentina.
Kinnear will remain with the Galaxy after serving as the club’s interim head coach for the end of the 2018 season. During the players’ exit interviews, many expressed their approval of Kinnear’s style, which may give a sense of continuity despite the massive overhaul the club has experienced this offseason.
Schmid, son of late Sigi Schmid, joined Inter Miami CF last week as the future MLS club’s technical director. Inter Miami is set to join MLS in 2020. Schmid and Barrieu both joined the Galaxy in fall 2017, while Hendrickson joined in Jan. 2018.
Preseason training ahead of the 2019 season is set to begin the week of Jan. 20. The Galaxy are slowly but surely putting together the pieces to rebuild the roster this offseason in hopes of avoiding a similar fate of the last two seasons.
