Former LA Galaxy midfielder Giovani Dos Santos signs with Club America

Former LA Galaxy midfielder Giovani Dos Santos has signed with Liga MX side Club America after several months of searching for his next destination.

Club America was a natural choice for Dos Santos because it was the club his father played for during several stints in the 1980s.

“Dreams do come true,” Dos Santos wrote in a tweet in Spanish. “Thank you very much Club America for welcoming me. I am very happy to join the best team in Mexico.”

Dos Santos’ contract with the LA Galaxy was bought in in March in order for the club to meet MLS roster requirements. MLS allows a total of three Designated Players, but Giovani Dos Santos, along with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Romain Alessandrini and Jonathan Dos Santos, gave the Galaxy four Designated Players on their roster.

“We worked closely with Giovani to find a new club that will be a good destination for him both on and off the field,” said Galaxy General Manager Dennis te Kloese in a statement from the Galaxy. “We thank Giovani for his contributions to the LA Galaxy and we wish him the best of luck with Club América.”

Giovani’s brother, Jonathan, remains with LA Galaxy and is representing the Mexican national team in the Gold Cup final. Jonathan has made three starts and four appearances so far for Mexico in the Gold Cup. He is expected to play a role in Sunday evening’s Gold Cup final match, during which Mexico will face the United States.

“One of the dreams that we had since we were young was to play for Club America,” Jonathan Dos Santos said in a tweet in Spanish. “Now it is a reality for you! Enjoy this special moment, brother. I am very happy for you! You deserve it!”
