The Galaxy will continue their run in the 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday night as they head to Portland to face the Timbers. Here’s what you need to know heading into the match:
- This is the Galaxy’s second match in this year’s tournament. They entered play in the fourth round and defeated NPSL side Orange County FC 3-0 Wednesday at the Dignity Health Sports Park Track and Field Stadium in Carson, Calif. During the win, 16 year-old midfielder Efrain Alvarez notched his first and second goals in a Galaxy uniform, including a stunning free kick goal.
- So far in this year’s Open Cup, the Portland Timbers defeated the Seattle Sounders 2-1 at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma, Wash. Wednesday night. Both of Portland’s goals were scored by Brian Fernandez.
- In last year’s tournament, the Galaxy fell 1-0 to the Portland Timbers in Portland during the Round of 16. They are looking for a different fate this year despite several key player absences due to international duty.
- The winner of this match will face the winner of the San Jose Earthquakes vs. LAFC match up taking place on Thursday night at Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles. According to a U.S. Soccer announcement with the potential quarterfinal schedule, the winner of the Timbers versus Galaxy match would play away to the winner of the San Jose versus LAFC match on either July 9 or 10.
