After a year away from Major League Soccer, Khiry Shelton is returning to Sporting Kansas City.
The 26-year-old forward, who scored twice in 20 games for Peter Vermes’ side in 2018, signed a three-year MLS contract through 2022 with an option for the 2023 campaign.
“Khiry is an experienced player who we are excited to bring back to the club,” Peter Vermes said. “As the 2020 season approaches, we will continue to strengthen our roster with signings on all three lines of the field.”
Shelton spent the past year with German club Paderborn, which earned promotion to the Bundesliga at the end of the 2018-19 2.Bundesliga season.
Since the club’s promotion, the former New York City FC forward played sparingly after making his German top-flight debut Sept. 28.
NYCFC selected Shelton with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft. He spent three seasons in the Bronx before his 2018 move to Sporting KC.
In 74 games over four MLS seasons, Shelton has eight goals and 15 assists.
