With five minutes left in regulation time, Nicolas Sanchez converted a penalty kick to put CF Monterrey of Mexico in the Concacaf Champions League quarterfinals with a 1-0 win over El Salvador’s Alianza FC in their Round of 16 second leg Wednesday night.
Sanchez’ goal, which came after teammate Dorlan Pabon was fouled in the penalty area at the Estadio BBVA Bancomer in Monterrey, was the only one of the series, but not the only penalty kick of the night. Alianza goalkeeper Rafael Garcia saved a Sanchez penalty attempt earlier in the second half.
In the quarterfinals, Monterrey will face the winner of Thursday’s Round of 16 match between Atlanta United and Herediano. Watch highlights of Wednesday’s match above. See the full CCL schedule and results here.
