Columbus Crew SC signed 23-year-old Brazilian midfielder Francisco Wellington Barbosa de Lisboa, better known as Robinho. The player was acquired for an undisclosed transfer fee from Ceara SC, a team in Brazil’s first division, the club announced Friday.
Robinho has bounced around clubs in the Brazilian league, going on loan multiple times as he continues to develop. In 119 appearances across multiple teams and leagues, he has scored 14 goals. The move appears to be more of a depth signing, as the Crew look to regain some lost production on the wings and push their current players for more production.
“We want to welcome Robinho to Columbus Crew SC as he is a young and dynamic wide attacking midfielder with tireless energy,” said Crew SC President Tim Bezbatchenko. “At 23, Robinho brings experience from more than 100 matches across all competitions in Brazil and we look forward to watching him continue to develop as we believe he adds depth at our wide attacking midfielder position.”
Robinho will occupy an international spot on the roster.
