COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Columbus Crew announced the trade of keeper Joe Bendik to the Philadelphia Union in exchance for a second round draft pick in the 2020 MLS Superdraft. Should Bendik meet certain performance conditions, Crew SC will receive $50,000 in General Allocation Money in 2020.
Bendik competed with Jon Kempin for the starting role after the transfer of Zack Steffen. Neither keeper latched on, leading to the Crew signing Curacao international Eloy Room. Bendik’s salary was nearly twice that of Kempin’s, making him the odd man out in the new goalie structure.
Bendik was just signed by Columbus in the offseason after they obtained his rights from Orlando City for $50,000 in GAM. “We would like to thank Joe Bendik for his time with the Club and wish him the best of luck in this next stage of his career,” said Crew SC President and General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko.
Bendik never registered a win for Columbus. In his six starts, he had one draw and five losses. His goals against average with the Crew was 2.00.
