COLUMBUS, Ohio — Columbus Crew SC have signed Derrick Etienne Jr. The versatile midfielder played for the New York Red Bulls after coming up through the club’s academy and spent the second half of the 2019 season on loan with FC Cincinnati.
The 23-year-old was a trialist in preseason with the Crew, who signed the Haitian international on a free transfer after Etienne’s contract option was declined by the Red Bulls after the 2019 season.
“Derrick is a fast, young player with MLS experience and after having him in preseason camp thus far, we are pleased to officially welcome him to Columbus Crew SC,” Crew SC president and general manager Tim Bezbatchenko said in a statement. “We believe Derrick is someone whose skill set makes him a valuable addition to our squad and who greatly strengthens our team’s attacking corps. We look forward to seeing Derrick’s contributions on the field.”
Etienne has six goals and four assists across 65 regular season MLS games, including 24 starts. After signing a homegrown contract with the Red Bulls, he won a USL Cup with the New York Red Bulls II in 2016 and spent the next three years with the Red Bulls. He scored the club’s Supporters’ Shield-clinching goal in a 1-0 Decision Day win over Orlando City SC in Oct. 2018.
On the international level, Etienne ha been capped 22 times by Haiti, scoring three goals.
The Crew roster now stands at 26 players. Clubs can sign up to 30 players.
