Atlanta United forward Josef Martinez underwent successful surgery on his right knee for a torn ACL.

The Venezuelan star shared on Instagram a post-surgery picture of himself giving a thumbs up from his hospital bed. He also thanked his doctors, teammates and fans for their support and urged people to take care of one another in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, which has brought the sports world to a halt.

“In the midst of the humanitarian crisis we are all living through, in which more than ever we need to think about and take care of each other, just wanted to share that I’m blessed that my knee surgery today went well,” Martinez said in the post.

“I want to personally thank UPMC in Pittsburgh, doctors Freddie Fu and Volker Musahl (pictured), @atlutd, my teammates and most of all the city of Atlanta for the unconditional support. Also, everyone in Venezuela and around the world for the good wishes and support. God bless and protect us all in these challenging times.”

Martinez sustained his injury during Atlanta United’s 2-1 win over Nashville SC during the season opener. He was injured in the 63rd minute when he clashed with a Nashville defender. Martinez initially came off the pitch for a couple of minutes before returning, however he went down again following a corner in the 67th minute.

The forward was eventually stretchered off the field. He was seen in an air cast following the match.

Since arriving in Atlanta in 2017, the designated player has made a profound impact. Martinez has made 103 appearances for the Five Stripes, scoring 90 goals.

The Major League Season is currently on hold for at least 30 days as the league and the rest of the world deal with COVID-19.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued guidelines suggesting mass gatherings of more than 50 people be restricted for an eight-week period, meaning the MLS season’s temporary suspension could be extended another month.

The United Soccer League decided to extend their temporary bans to the USL Championship season and the USL League One season on Wednesday through at least May 10.
