Atlanta United signed winger Manuel Castro on loan from Club Estudiantes de La Plata of Argentina’s Primera División. It is a six-month loan deal with the option to extend through the end of the calendar year, the club announced Wednesday.
The 24-year-old will occupy an international slot and be added to the roster pending the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and P-1 Visa.
“Manuel is a versatile winger with valuable experience in both the Argentine and Uruguayan first divisions and he’ll add solid competition to our attack,” Atlanta United vice president and technical director Carlos Bocanegra said in a statement. “His work rate and willingness to run both ways fits in with our dynamic style of play. We look forward to welcoming him to Atlanta and into our team.”
Castro has scored three goals in 27 appearances with Estudiantes, including one in 14 appearances during the 2019/20 Superliga season. He previously competed for Montevideo Wanderers in his native Uruguay after coming up through the club’s youth ranks. Castro had 17 goals in 87 appearances for Wanderers after making his debut at the age of 19 in 2014.
Castro had a career-high six goals in 2018 before making the move to Estudiantes last January.
