Atlanta United FC’s preseason schedule has the club playing or training in three states as well as Mexico in preparation for its 2020 campaign.
The club announced the schedule on Wednesday, and everything begins on Jan. 13, when the Five Stripes open training camp at their headquarters in Marietta, Georgia.
Frank de Boer’s side will then travel to Bradenton, Fla. for a stay at IMG Academy. They will begin training at the facility on Jan. 20 and play exhibition matches against the New York Red Bulls, the Philadelphia Union and Swedish side IF Elfsborg. All of those matches are closed to the public.
The Five Stripes will then travel to Birmingham, Alabama to face Birmingham Legion FC of the USL Championship on Feb. 8. That match is open to the public and is set for a 3:30 p.m. CT kick-off at BBVA Field.
It will be the third time Atlanta United has played at a lower-division club based in the southeast during the preseason. The Five Stripes played at Chattanooga FC in 2017 and Nashville SC – then of the USL Championship – in 2018.
After facing Birmingham, the Five Stripes will then travel to Guadalajara, Mexico for a few days of training.
They return to Atlanta on Feb. 13 and begin play in Concacaf Champions League on Feb. 18 with a road match vs. Motagua in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. The return leg will be played Feb. 25 in Kennesaw, Georgia.
After winning the MLS Cup in 2018, Atlanta United captured the U.S. Open Cup and Campeones Cup in 2019, their first season under de Boer.
