Atlanta United’s first home game of the 2020 Major League Soccer regular-season will come against FC Cincinnati. Atlanta and Cincinnati are scheduled to meet at Mercedes-Benz Stadium Saturday, March 7, at 7 p.m. ET.
Single-game tickets will go on sale in January. It is unclear if Mercedes-Benz Stadium’s third level will be open for the game, as it was for the Five Stripes’ 2018 and 2019 home openers. Atlanta is hoping to announce its set of “full-capacity” matches for the 2020 season along with MLS’ complete schedule release before Christmas, a team spokesperson told Pro Soccer USA. Last season, Atlanta opened the stadium to full capacity for six regular-season games.
As it did last season, this matchup will give Atlanta fans their first glimpse at a familiar face in a new uniform. Cincinnati acquired Brandon Vazquez via trade after Nashville SC selected the young forward in last month’s expansion draft. Atlanta traded fullback Greg Garza to Cincinnati shortly after winning the 2018 MLS Cup. Garza remains with the Orange and Blue.
Atlanta now has three MLS games on its calendar. The Five Stripes open the regular season Feb. 29 at Nashville in the expansion franchise’s inaugural league game. Atlanta travels to Chicago March 21 for the Fire’s home opener at Soldier Field.
The Five Stripes will kick off their 2020 competitive season in Concacaf Champions League play. Round-of-16 first-leg games will take place Feb. 18-20, and second-leg matches will fall between Feb. 25-27. Should Atlanta advance, quarterfinal first legs are set for March 10-12, and second legs will take place March 17-19.
