On Tuesday, Ronny Deila was running his second session in preseason for New York City FC after being named their fourth head coach a little over a week ago. The 44-year old Norwegian has been a first-team manager for 12 seasons in Europe, including the legendary Glasgow Celtic FC.
Kieran Devlin covers Celtic FC for The Athletic and he provided a detailed profile of the City head coach when he spoke with Pro Soccer USA’s Glenn Crooks for this episode of On Frame.
Although he won three trophies in two seasons in Glasgow, Deila was dismissed due to his lack of success in European competitions and a team that struggled to adjust to his methods.
“He was the right man for the right place at the wrong time,” Devlin said.
Deila is regarded as a top developer of players and Devlin claimed that Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk, the 2019 European Player of the Year and Ballon d’Or runnerup, blossomed under Deila.
“He had a massive, massive impact on van Dijk.”
Also on this episode, Brian Sciaretta, who covers the U.S. Men’s National Team for American Soccer Now. Sciaretta discusses the January camp and the cancelled trip to Qatar and the many young players that could have a future impact on the full team.
